The waterfront area along the Oslo fjord south of central Oslo contains a number of sophisticated modern buildings, among which the Oslo opera house (built between 2003 and 2007) is the most significant one. The entire area underwent a process or urban redevelopment in the 2000s, during which the former container port was transformed into a business and cultural centre. The Akershus fortress is a medieval castle initially completed around 1300 AD.
