The Eixample is a district of Barcelona lying between the old city and the small towns which once were surrounding Barcelona. Construction started here in the middle of the 19th century along a chessboard patterns, using a grid of parallel and interecting streets. Several houses in this district were designed by Modernisme architects, among which the most famous are Antoni Gaudi, Josep Puig i Cadafalch, Josep Domènech i Estapà, Josep Vilaseca i Casanovas and Enric Sagnier i Villavecchia. The most famous buildings are the Casa Mila, Casa Batllo, Casa Fuster and the Manzana de la Discordia.
