City centre

The centre of Kiev extends from the Maidan towards the south and west on the western bank of the Dnepr river. There are some landmarks such as the Maidan square (Maidan Nezalezhnosti), the central square of Kiev, and Khreshchatyk street, the main shopping street of Kiev. Most buildings in this area are built in Neoclassical or Soviet style. The opera house (Taras Shevchenko National Opera and Ballet Theatre of Ukraine) was built in 1867.
