The Arabian oryx (Oryx leucoryx) is a type of antelope endemic to the Arabian peninsula, which became extinct in the wild in 1972. Following zoo breeding programs, the species was reintroduced to the wild in Qatar, Bahrain, Israel, Jordan and Saudi Arabia starting from the 1980s. One of the largest populations of Arabian oryx exists on Sir Bani Yas Island in the Abu Dhabi emirate.
