The Rub al Khali desert or Empty Quarter starts south of the Liwa oasis. It is 1000km long and 500km wide and is shared by the U.A.E., Oman, Yemen and Saudi Arabia. Near the Liwa oasis the desert consists mainly of sand dunes, which are up to 300m high. The colour of the sand is orange. The ripple and wave patterns found in the sand are created by the wind.
