The United Arab Emirates (also known as UAE or as the Emirates) is a Middle Eastern country located in the southeast of the Arabian Peninsula on the Persian Gulf, bordering Saudi Arabia and Oman. It consists of seven emirates: Abu Dhabi, Ajman, Dubai, Fujairah, Ras al-Khaimah, Sharjah, and Umm al-Quwain. A former British protectorate, the country achieved independence in 1971. The United Arab Emirates are rich in oil, with the reserves expected to last for another 100 years at the current production rate.
