02 Urfa man statue
The Urfa man is the oldest known, life-size statue to have survived into the present. It was unearthed in the mid-1990s below the old city of Sanliurfa, just to the north of Balikligöl in the area of a large pre-pottery Neolithic settlement. The limestone statue is 1.80m tall and has large eye sockets which are filled with black obsidian eyes. The statue has hands folded in front and naked, except for the V-shaped lines resembling a necklace. The lower section of the statue was made with a U-shape, so that it would fit into a socket. It is dated circa 9000 BC to the period of the pre-pottery Neolithic.
