The Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka (ශ්රී ලංකා in Sinhala, இலங்கை in Tamil) is a small country of 22 million inhabitants in south Asia.
It is an island of 65610 km² located immediately south of India in the Indian ocean. The island is mostly flat and consists to a large extent of plains. Only in the southern part there are mountains, reaching a maximum height of 2524 metres. Sri Lanka lies north of the equator at a latitude of between 6 and 10 degrees and has a tropical climate with dry and wet seasons.
On the mountain slopes in the south there are extensive tea plantations at altitudes above 600m above sea level. Tea production is one of the main sources of foreign exchange for Sri Lanka.
The people of Sri Lanka are mostly Sinhalese Buddhists. A Tamil Hindu minority lives in the north of the country.
Sri Lanka has a rich cultural heritage and history and has been settled since prehistoric times. Due to its historical, cultural and natural highlights it receives a large number of tourists every year.
