The historic core of Granada lies at the foot of the Alhambra hill and is centred around the Gothic Granada cathedral, which is surrounded by a maze of narrow alleys. The Gran Via de Colon intersects from north to south the historic core of Granada. To the north of the Alhambra lies the Albaicin district which extends on the southern side of a hill and retains the narrow winding streets of its Moorish period. The Albaicin has been a UNESCO World heritage site since 1984, together with the Alhambra.
