Barcelona
Barcelona is the capital of the Spanish region of Catalonia and Spain's second largest city. It lies in northwestern Spain on the mediterranean coast, not far away from the Pyrenees mountain range. Barcelona has 1.6 million inhabitants, with 4.2 million in its urban area. Barcelona was originally founded in the 3rd century BC and later became the capital of the counts of Barcelona. Following the discovery of America and the shift of world trade out of the Mediterranean sea Barcelona's importance declined. Nowadays Barcelona is a leading tourist, economic and cultural centre in Spain and the Mediterranean and has one of the principal Mediterranean ports. Barcelona receives several million tourists every year. Its main attractions are the works of the architects Antoni Gaudí and Lluís Domènech i Montaner, exponents of the Modernisme architectural style, which have been designated UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Barcelona is a clean and well organised city, with an excellent infrastructure. It has a high speed rail link connecting it with Madrid and a major international airport handling 30 million passengers per year.
