The kingdom of Spain is a large southwest European country, located on a peninsula to the south of France. It is bordered to the south and east by the Mediterranean, to the north by the Atlantic ocean and the Pyrenees. While Spain has been inhabited since prehistoric ages, the modern Spanish started emerging in the late middle ages. After the discovery of America Spain became a global empire for the next two centuries. Its legacy are the over 400 million Spanish speakers in many countries today. For the past 10 years the Spanish economy has been growing robustly and is nowadays the eigth largest economy worldwide. Spain has a thriving tourism sector and a high degree of human development.
