Belgrade (Beograd / Београд in Serbian) is the capital of Serbia. It is located in the Pannonian plains in the north of Serbia, at the confluence of the Sava and Danube rivers. The area has been settled since prehistoric times. During Roman times it was a major city of the empire. The Slavs settled down in the Belgrade area in the 6th century and later made Belgrade their capital. Later Belgrade was occupied by the Ottomans and the Habsburg empire. Over the centuries the city was destroyed and rebuilt several times. It became the capital of Yugoslavia after World War I and the capital of Serbia after 1991.|
