Trondheim is a city of 205000 inhabitants in the south of the central Norwegian county of Trøndelag. It lies along the coast of a large fjord, the Trondheimfjord, and has about 1000 years of history. The city was founded as Kaupangen by king Olav Tryggvason in 997 AD. It was renamed to Nidaros and became the capital of Norway until 1217.
Trondheim has a number of historic buildings, the most significant being the Nidaros cathedral, which was built between 1070 and 1300. The ruins of the Kristiansten fortress, built between 1682 and 1684, are on a hill overlooking the city from the east.
The Torvet is a large square centrally located in Trondheim, which has been recently renovated. In the past it was a market square and a residential area for the rich with mansions on three sides of the square. The Trondheim Torg shopping mall is on this square.
A very nice area in Trondheim is the waterfront area around the Solsiden mall, the former shipyard area at the mouth of the Nidelva river.
How to get to Trondheim
Trondheim can be reached by plane, boat, train or car. It has an international airport with flights to a number of European cities.
