Penang (or Pulau Pinang in Bahasa Malaysia), is a 285 sq km island off the north-western coast of peninsular Malaysia. It is the oldest British settlement in Malaysia and one of the country's premier tourist areas as well as being home to Malaysia's high tech manufacturing sector. The major attraction are not its beaches, which are somewhat overrated, but the town of Georgetown, a relatively compact city with a rich colonial heritage and beautiful old Chinese houses, vegetable markets, temples and mosques.
