The lower reaches of the Kinabatangan river are full of rare wildlife and virgin rainforest and were designated in 1999 a wildlife sanctuary. This is a status one step below that of national park and so villages and agricultural development have been allowed to criss-cross the protected sections. Especially in the monsoon season, the area is frequently flooded. The banks of the Kinabatangan river are heavily forested.
