Located on the bnks of the Neris river in the east of Lithuania not far from the border to Belarus, Vilnius is the capital of Lithuania and its largest city with 540000 inhabitants. Vilnius was first established in the 13-14th centuries around a fortress on Gediminas hill. By the end of the 16th century Vilnius was one of the largest eastern European cities. The historic core of Vilnius is located around cathedral square and is relatively small. It contains several Baroque and Neoclassical buildings. The historic centre of Vilnius has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1994
