Due to the destruction during the Lebanese civil war (1975-1990) only few historical buildings are left in Beirut. These are concentrated at the southern end of the Solidere area. Here there are some mosques (Al Amin, Al Omari), some churches (St George Greek Orthodox cathedral and St George Maronite cathedral) and the ruins of Roman baths dating back to the Roman period. The American University of Beirut was set up in 1866 by the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions.
