The Xieng Khouang (also spelled Xiangkhoang, Xieng Khuang or Xiengkuang) province is a mountainous plateau in the north of Laos. The highest peaks of the plateau are between 2000 and 3000 meters high. Several tributaries of the Mekong originate in the Xieng Khouang region. Most tourists travel to the region to visit the world famous Plain of Jars sites, which contain huge stone jars dating back to 1500-2000 years ago.
