Wat Sisaket (Wat Sisaketsata Sahatsaham), Vientiane's oldest Buddhist monastery, was built by King Chao Anouvong in 1818. Its Siamese style perhaps saved it from the Siamese armies who sacked Vientiane in 1828. The inner sanctuary contains a large number of Buddha statues dating back to the 16th to 19th centuries.
