Cholpon-Ata is a resort town in the middle of the northern shore of the Issyk Kul lake at over 1600m of altitude. The city has not much of interest, except for the nearby petroglyphs area and a small museum, but it is popular as a beach resort. At the moment there is a lack of international level hotels and resorts, with most Accommodation consisting of relatively basic pensions, hostels and guesthouses. Cholpon-Ata has some beaches which in summer fill up mainly with Russian, Kazakh and Kyrgyz tourists. The Ruh Ordo cultural centre is sort of a museum / theme park, nicely choreographed and dedicated to five religions.
