Located on the centre of the island of Honshu on its eastern coast, Tokyo is the capital of Japan and, with almost 13 million inhabitants, its largest city. The Greater Tokyo area is the largest metropolitan area in the world and has 35 million inhabitants. Tokyo consists mostly of modern architecture and has very few old buildings, which is probably due to the damages suffered during World War II. It's a vertical city with skyscrapers everywhere. There is no historic core worth mentioning left. Tokyo was originally a small fishing village named Edo. At the beginning of the 17th century it became Japan's government centre, underwent a phase of rapid growth and in 1869 became the de facto capital of Japan when the Meiji emperor moved his residence there.
Tokyo is huge. I spent almost one week in this city and only managed to scratch the surface. Every time I was thinking I had seen the major sights, a new and highly interesting site would pop up, leaving me wondering why I had left it out. There are several urban centres (cities in the city) and spots of interest in Tokyo.
