Sicily is a large island in the Mediterranean Sea in the south of Italy. It has a triangular shape and extends for 300km from east to west and 200km from north to south. The terrain consists to a large extent of hills and mountains. The highest mountain is Mt Etna (3320m), an active volcano in the east of the island. Sicily has been settled since prehistoric times. Greeks started setting up colonies in 750 BC, followed by the Carthaginians and later the Romans. Over the course of the centuries Sicily has been ruled by a number of different people. As a consequence of this, Sicily has rich cultural and historical heritage with lots of sites of interest. The Sicilian economy nowadays is less developed than the Italian average.
