Since Mt Damavand is a dormant volcano, its summit consists of a large crater which is covered by snow even during the summer months. Around the summit there are sulfur gas emission coming out of the rocks. These supposedly are strong enough to kill sheep who inadvertently come too close and breathe the poisonous gases. The summit lies at an altitude of 5670m above sea level.
