Kharanaq is an almost deserted village located 70km north of Yazd on a hill overlooking a valley cultivated with artificial irrigation. The village is over 1000 years old and the area has been inhabited for more than 4000 years. The major attraction of Kharanaq are the ruins of a mud brick castle or citadel, which consists of a number of buildings and other structure in a very bad restoration state. Walking along the structures is dangerous, as the roofs of the buildings might collapse. The shaking minaret and a caravanserai have been renovated.
