Flores is the second largest of the Lesser Sunda islands in the Indonesian Nusa Tenggara province.
Located 500km east of Bali and 300km south of Sulawesi, it measures 350km from east to west and 65km from north to south at its widest point (total area of 15175 km²).
Flores is a very mountainous islands with several volcanoes, some of which are still active. The island is very green and largely covered by tropical rainforests. Some parts of Flores are more dry and are covered by savannahs.
The population of Flores consists of five ethnic groups (the Manggara in the west, the Ngada around Bajawa, the Ende and Lio people in Ende, the Sikkanese in Maumere and the Lamaholot around Larantuka), for a total of 1.8 million inhabitants. The main tourist attractions are the Komodo national park near Labuan Bajo, the traditional villages in the interior, beaches and islands near Flores and the scenery and mountains. The main entry points for tourists are the airports in Labuan Bajo, Maumere and Ende, which have flights to Bali, West Timor and Sulawesi.
