Located along the Malabar coast 60km south of Kochi, Alappuzha (also known as Allepey) is the main access point to the Kerala backwaters. Here is where trips to the backwaters on houseboats usually start. Alappuzha is a relatively small city, with few own attractions, except for the nice beach which is however unsuitable for swimming due to the strong currents. Alappuzha is an idyllic place criss-crossed by a maze of channels covered by tree canopies.
