Lake Balaton is the largest lake in central Europe. It is located in the Hungarian planes, about 90km southwest of Budapest. The lake is 78km long and 14km wide at its widest point. It has an area of 600 km², an average depth of 3.3m and a maximum depth of 12m. The lake generates its own mild microclimate, allowing the cultivation of grapes around its region. Lake Balaton is a major tourist centre and the cities of Siófok, Keszthely, and Balatonfüred are the major resorts.
Tihany is a small cute town on the central peninsula with many reed roof houses and a big historic church.
