The Cyclades are a group of Greek islands in the Aegean archipelago, located to the southeast of the Greek mainland. The Cyclades consist of 220 islands, of which only the major ones (Amorgós, Anáfe, Ándros, Antíparos, Delos, Escháte, Íos, Kéa, Kímolos, Kýthnos, Melos, Mýkonos, Náxos, Páros, Folégandros, Sérifos, Sífnos, Síkinos, Sýros, Tenos and Santoríni) are inhabited. The islands have been settled since prehiitoric times, with the most ancient traces found on Milos dating back to the 11th millennium BC. The Cycladic civilisation peaked during the 3rd millenium BC. The Cyclades are connected by numerous ferries.
