Copenhagen is the capital of Denmark and with 1.2 million inhabitants its largest city. The city is located on the islands of Zealand and Amager, close to Sweden. The centre of Copenhagen is criss-crossed by a number of canals and waterways and has several green areas, which give it a unique character and atmosphere. Especially in the summer when days are long, Copenhagen is a very photogenic place due to the special light of this period. Copenhagen was founded as a Viking fishing village in the 10th century and grew to become the capital of Denmark in the early 15th century. In the centre of Copenhagen there are many baroque and neoclassical era buildings. Copenhagen is one of the richest wealthiest in the world.
