Croatia is a small country of 56594 km² in southern central Europe, with a very long coastline with over 1000 islands. The south and the west of Croatia are mostly mountainous, while the north at the east consist mainly of plains. Croatia emerged as an independent state from the breakdown of former Yugoslavia in 1991. It has a long and rich history spanning from prehistpric times until modern times. Croatia has a well-developed economy with a GDP at 61% of the EU average.
