Australia is a large country in the southern hemisphere, consisting of the mainland of Oceania and a few neighbouring islands. Most of Australia is flat and arid with only the southeast and north of the country receiving sufficient rainfall. With a population of just 21 million and almost the same are as the USA, Australia is a sparsely populated country. Most of the people live in the temperate southeast. Australia was colonised by the British starting from the 18th century. About 90% of the population nowadays is of European descent. Australia is a parliamentary democracy with a market oriented economy. It is technologically advanced and industrialised and has a high GDP.
