Albania is a small country in southeastern Europe on the Balkan peninsula. It lies on the Adriatic and Ionian seas and is bordered in the north by Montenegro and in the east and south by Macedonia and Greece.
Albania is mostly mountainous, with Mount Korab being its highest point at 2764m. Lake Shkodër is its largest lake, with a surface varying between 370 km² and 530 km².
In ancient times Albania was populated by Illyrian tribes. Albania became part of the Roman empire after 167 BC and later part of the Byzantine empire. An independent Albanian state formed at the end of the 12th century, then in the 15th century Albania was occupied by the Ottomans. Albania became independent again in 1912.
The capital of Albania is Tirana.
Albania has a developing mixed economy, with a GDP per capita standing at 30% of the European Union average (PPP 35%).
The cost level in Albania is still relatively low, making travelling in Albania quite affordable. The tourist sector is rapidly growing and contributes 8.4% to the GDP.
