In the centre of Saigon are many buildings of the French colonial era, which were built in the second half of the 19th century. These include the French Opera House, which once was home to the National Assembly, Hotel Continental built in 1880, the yellow and white city hall now home to the Ho Chi Minh City People's commitee, the red brick twin-spired Notre Dame cathedral built between 1877-1880 on the site of an ancient pagoda, the General Post Office with its imposing high vaulted ceiling built in the 1880s and more.
