Hoi An lies along the estuary of the Thu Bon river, which in the past provided navigable access to the hinterland. By the end of the 19th century the river started to silt up and is now too shallow for navigation by larger ships. Nowadays along the river are the remains of the ancient port and picturesque waterfronts.
