Bangkok was once known as the "Venice of the East" because it was criss-crossed by a maze of canals and waterways. Over time many of these canals were filled in to make way for new roads and buildings. In the Thonburi district of Bangkok, west of Bangkok along the Chao Phraya, many of these old canals were preserved and can be visited today.
