International organisations

Around Nations square (place des Nations) there are a number of international organisations: the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), a standardisation and regulatory body for telecommunications; the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), a UN agency created in 1967 "to encourage creative activity, to promote the protection of intellectual property throughout the world"; the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), a UN agency mandated to protect and support refugees and assists in their voluntary repatriation, local integration or resettlement to a third country. The European UN headquarters and the secretariat of the International Committee of the Red Cross are also located here.
