The Plaza de Zocodover is a colourful square lying in the centre of the old town of Toledo. It originated as a marketplace for workhorses, and later was the place where celebrations and corridas were held. Near the Zocodover square lies the Alcazar, the fortified palace of Charles V built in the 16th century based on a design by Alonso de Covarrubias. The Alcazar has been destroyed and rebuilt several times since then.
