The baroque Royal Palace (Palacio Real de Madrid) was built on the site of a former fortress, the Alcįzar, which burnt down in 1734. The palace has 135000 sqm of floorspace and 2800 rooms, which make it the largest palace in Europe. It is adjacent the Almudena cathedral and oversees the Campo del Moro gardens immediately beneath it. The Royal Palace is the official residence of the King of Spain.
