Montjuïc is a large flat hill above Barcelona to the west of the city centre. At the top of the hill (173m height) lies a 17th century fortress overlooking the harbour area. The top of the hill is accessible via a short cablecar. For the 1929 International Exposition large scale works were undertaken which resulted in the addition of parks and museums to the area. The most significant building is the Palau Nacional which nowadays hosts the Catalan Museum of Art. A series of staircases and escalators lead from Placa Espanya to Palau Nacional.
