In the Baixa (lower city) area in central Lisbon, south of the Rossio square, is a large pedestrian area centered on the Rua Augusta. This area contains many historic buildings, which house a multitude of shops and cafes. The Comercio square lies along the Tagus river and was the location of the royal palace between 1511 and 1755, the year in which it was destroyed by an earthquake.
