Bairro Alto (higher district in Portuguese) is one of the oldest districts of Lisbon on a hill to the west of the Rossio, consisting of the Chiado and Carmo quarters. The district contains narrow cobblestone alleys and historic buildings and is a residential, shopping and entertainment district, with many fado music clubs. Prostitution and gambling was once present in this area.
