Much of what can nowadays be seen in the historic core of Muscat has been built after the ascension to the throne of Sultan Qaboos bin Said in 1970. In fact the historic core retains very little of the old times and consists mainly of the palace of the Sultan, some mosques and government buildings. Old Muscat is relatively small and can be visited in a couple of hours.
