This photo gallery contains a selection of pictures of Sagaing, a former capital which lies on the right bank of the Ayeyarwady. Founded in by Athinkhaya Sawyun, a Shan chieftain, in 1315 it was the Shan capital until 1364, when Ava was founded. Nowadays Sagaing is widely regarded as the religious centre of Myanmar. The Sagaing hill is covered with around 600 pagodas in which more than 3000 monks reside.
