With its 70m minaret the Koutoubia mosque is the largest mosque in Marrakech. It was built by the Almohad caliph Yacoub el-Mansour (1184-1199) in Moroccan-Andalusian style. When it was first built, the mosque was covered with painted plaster and coloured zellij tile work, but this decoration has disappeared over time.
