Istana Besar is the former residence of the Johor royal family. Surrounded by extensive gardens, it nowadays hosts the Royal Abu Bakar Museum which consists of four parts: the Dewan, the Throne Room, the Treasure Rooms and the Hunting Room. The palace complex was built in 1866 by Sultan Abu Bakar in Anglo-Malay architecture.
