The Ueno park located next to the Ueno station is a large park which opened to the public in 1873. At its southern entrance stands the statue of Saigo Takamori, a 19th century samurai. Several museums, including the Tokyo National Museum, the Orient Museum, the National Science Museum, the Shitamachi Museum, the National Museum for Western Art and the Tokyo Metropolitan Fine Art Gallery are located inside the park. In the park compound are also a number of temples and shrines.
