The Nijo castle is a flatland castle in Kyoto. It has two concentric rings of fortifications, which surround the Ninomaru Palace, the ruins of the Honmaru Palace, various support buildings and several gardens. Construction of the castle started in 1601 under Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder of the Tokugawa Shogunate and was completed during the reign of Tokugawa Iemitsu in 1626.
