Verona is a provincial capital in northwestern Italy on the Adige river. While the area has been settled since prehistoric times, Verona started to be a real city only in 89 BC when a Roman colony was founded. The city went through a number of rulers, experiencing a period of splendor in the Middle Ages. Nowadays Verona has several historic buildings and sites, from the Roman period, the Middle Ages and renaissance periods. Its most significant site is the Arena, a still in use Roman amphitheatre. Verona is the setting of the story of Romeo and Juliet, made famous by William Shakespeare. The city of Verona has been a UNESCO world heritage site since the year 2000.
