The central station in Milan was completed in 1931, based on a design of the Italian architect Ulisse Stacchini, who was inspired by Union Station in Washington, DC. Its facade is 200m wide and its vault 72 metres high. It has 24 platforms and every day about 330,000 passengers use the station. The station is based on a mix of architectural styles, ranging from Fascist architecture to Liberty and Art Deco. Since 2006 the station is being refurbished.
