The Imam Reza Holy Shrine, also known as Haram-e Razavi, or Haram complex is a major pilgrimage centre for Shia Muslims. It extends over an area of 500m x 500m and contains the world's largest mosque, several courtyards, beautifully decorated halls and other structures, such as for instance the blue dome, the golden dome and the golden minarets. The shrine originated in the ninth century AD around the tomb of Imam Reza, the eighth Imam of the Twelver Shiites. Over the centuries the shrine was destroyed and rebuilt several times. The Imam Reza shrine is open also to non-Muslims, except for the Holy Shrine and the Gohar Shad mosque.
